Herenkoa. Home to many, humans and creatures.
Though the tribe we look at today are said to not exist.
Buried in the south somewhere is the dead city of Orcus. Founded when the first humans crossed the desert to find new places to expand into, one tribe headed north and one went south. The tribes that are in the North are the Elven. Taking nature as their guide and building within the forests and the plains.
This is not about them though. This is about what happened in the south, deep below the mountains across the plains and between the forked rivers. Somewhere in this region is the city of Orcus.

The City is known as the dead city since the population vanished. No one knows where, but anyone attempting to settle either runs in fear of the monsters that seem to hide in the shadows.

The truth though is far darker. Knowing the war was coming where every tribe would take up arms against each other the Orcus population wanted non of this and came to an idea. They decimated the city, well that would be how it looked from the outside, but the reality was far more complicated.
To begin with they started sending out scouting parties dressed as monsters, using masks hammered from iron and armour plates to make them look larger, fashioned tusks and pointed ears to hide their human form.
This would send scouts from other cities and even traders running back to their own villages with tales of monsters surrounding the dead city.
Occasionally one of the villagers would be chosen to leave, to carry stories to other tribes, declaring they had escaped from the city of the dead. An wanted to return to battle with their brothers.
This scared the other villages more, and more and they stayed away.
With each whisper and mention Orcus became the City of the Dead, where when great warriors fall there spirits went to, to live out their days held in by monsters never allowed to leave, to feast for ever in the great halls and sing songs of their battles.

War is coming to Orcus though, you can't hide forever. An the time to defend this mythical city will soon be upon them. An the Orcans will have to raise their masks once more and become the forgotten warriors and monsters of old to defend this place from the giants rising in the lands of ice below them, the Taurus raging above them and the Wares looking for new places to hunt.

I've been a bit lapse.

Been writing Herenkoa back ground, doing more research into things to make it work.
This has kept me rather busy, wanted to get my mythology right and wanted to adapt it, plus wanted to collect more information about other cultures and countries in order to give a wider and broader scope to what I was doing with it.
So I started studying. This has taken up a lot of my time. An given me an even richer and wider back ground for the races. Plus adding more races to the world.

District. It's done. Just got to write the fluff and do the artwork, can't keep adding to it as it just ends up with a massive ball of never going to be finished game. Still got to sculpt models and my head needs to get back into that first and my head hasn't exactly been here of late lots of things going on in the real world I didn't need or want.

Final Earth...... Will come back to this one day. It's rather deep.

So presently putting up new things to the portfolio website, fixing the bugs that no one told me where there and sorting out a few small bits and pieces, hoping to have it all done by the end of the week, though so far today all I have done is sat over a scanner uploading concept and artwork to my laptop in order to put it on the web site.

So thats where we are as I am typing this.

More will follow just not sure when......

Been playing around with..

So I have been playing around with Adobe Muse and Adobe edge, just to get to grips with them.
Yes I could do things with HTML and CSS but to be honest if a software program is going to take up a lot of the slack and bits in coding I miss I am going to use it, have been using Muse to do web sites for a few months, all my sites are now built in Muse as I just find it so easy to build a site as I would a page in InDesign and that is effectively what Muse is. Web building as you would a page in a book.

Anyway, I have updated and rebuilt both my portfolio site www.final-earth.co.uk and am rebuilding www.final-gamez.co.uk to show off the games and the work in progress stuff and give everyone bit more of an idea what I am doing.

The sites are up and functioning, animation has been done using adobe edge, it's a CSS variation of flash which is the best way to describe it I think.

New animations up so Final Earth page with in Final Gamez site may take a little bit to load, but its worth it.
On top of this Herenkoa old Beta is floating around to, I am going back to the drawing board with this once District is finished as I feel the mechanic could be tightened up a bit plus it was written as a D10 and a D12 game and I think the D12 version is better. Though have been playing with a D6 mechanic as well.

Herenkoa, will be a full blown war game now when it comes back with Squads and groups, Final Earth will split between skirmish and War game depending on what you want to play and am working on a mechanic that allows things to change so Skirmish would be played in Inches and War game in Centimetres, just need to find a balancing point is all to make it work.

District is staying as a Skirmish game it is gangs fighting between themselves and while the back ground I am working on could lend itself one day to a full war game based in a distant future at this time I don't want to go there with it.  I want to get everything else finished first.

So latest update.

Plus any one wanting to get a copy of district in it's present rules are there but very little else please get in touch. Would like to hear other peoples opinions on the mechanic. Don't mean I will change anything about it but nice to get feed back from outside the group who have been testing it.

District And Art Work

As we all know every good rule books should have art work, photographs, models and words.
Simple enough to do, now here is my issue my art style really is not suited to doing large scenes, well if I am honest and this is only my self critic talking my art style is not really suited to doing much more than a rough outline of the model I am designing.
With this al in mind I am now starting the art for District, an the plan is to actually build everything, so streets, buildings, tunnels and hills and cliffs if they be required. Then paint it all, trust air brush in hand for that and then position it and do the photos as the art work.
Does this sound like a bit of an OTT project or not?
I could raw it all and leave you to work out if its a tree or a gate post but I like the idea of building it slightly more, should also give some entertaining gaming board's to play on as well.
I am not building the whole city. I really don't have time or resources to do that.
Also if a general gaming area is 2'X2' and this is only a small area block and the city is nearly 100 miles across it would be a hell of a lot of gaming boards to build said city and not enough room in my "studio" to build it.

District coming some time this century........... I am hoping this year..... this year being 2013............

Mind on over drive

I wrote a bit of a rant, possibilities and random thoughts down the other week on my personal blog. It was actually in reply to someone during an email conversation about death and life and things which were hard to come to terms with. Generally I am not an overly religious person but I do like to study and I study all manner of things, from history and science to religion as they have some interesting points of reference for different things I am working on.
But it did get me thinking, and this lead to the idea of the 7 year war.
7 year war? Was there a 7 year war? The rapture (Always makes me think of the Dinosaur) folks think this is the case, humans will be ruptured off into haven and the sinners will be left on Earth to fight the Demons and Angels who will return to Earth to end the line of Good V's Evil.

Should I write this as a Game? a What If style war game. it has possibilities so far outside the box it is running around inside my head as how it would play what would be used when it would be set and so on.

So should I do it? District is coming to completion and I just want to try and put together another quick rule mechanic and a bit of a bigger skirmish game with the usual insane miniatures and art work. (Oh if I could draw good it would be) So thoughts people what are they?

District Characters and Models

Until this point we have been using other company models to represent the District characters and teams that run around. We have used Heresy Gang models. Heresy Gang Link
We have used some green's I threw together.
We have used Hassle free models. Hassle Free Sci Fi Models
We have used all kinds of models. I've been happy in play testing the rules like this but I have always had my own vision for the miniatures for the game.
Yes they are a little cartoonish but that is my style of drawing or was when I did these concept sketches.
I did a 54mm model for the game to as I thought 54mm would be a nice size.
I even started a couple of 3ups just in case I was going to go plastic.
And of course I went and sculpted a lot of heroic scale 28/34mm models.
So, I now have spent the last 6-8 weeks learning ZBrush, found the funds to buy a copy so I could do concepts a lot faster and once I can afford it I will have a 3D printer to start printing them out so I can see how they look in the real world. I am also getting a lot closer to what I want them to look like through trial and error, using my own armature I designed and using the human tool from with in the game, I though I should bring you up to speed on where these models are and any one following @FinalGamez on twitter can see a constant influx of updated sculpts and models as I rattle through different design ideas and models.
District has changed a lot since the original beta was posted. So below you will find the models so far done a mixture of my own and the human tool combined and if you'd like to leave thoughts on them please do.

What is District?

District is a skirmish table top game.
Yes we know this. We all know this I have covered this several times over the years.
No one really knows much more than that. So what is the plan for District what is the world, worlds like?
This is what I am covering here.
A lot of the games out there are post apolitical,  after a great war, desolate waste lands, nuclear holocaust, rebuilding from the ashes, trying to control or save the planet, human race and so on.
District is not. There was a great war it happened but the people living on this world where never there to see it.
It all happened while they were travelling to the new world. It took 400 years, and communication between the earth and the planet is not going to happen.
So this means the world is still full functioning, bah its small "Gang" problem. As powers rise to take control of area's and maintain its underworld.

The world itself, though I have written the design specifications for the D.R.O.I.D systems, and the creation of the world from this blue print. I always wanted the world to look something like....

I like the idea of a mega city, I also like the idea of slums on the outskirts and the variations between the two being very similar but very different.

These are the original CAD concepts of the boards and the buildings. Vastly filling the board and having narrow walk ways between, the boards were based on a 2'X2' board size. Yes tiny play area. But lots of things to hide behind. The idea of the habbitation box was so that you could just use an 8cm cube to represent buildings easily, this also lead to designing the buildings and creating them in card, just as mock ups, along with the idea of allowing them to lock together. This in produced this.

This is a recreational zone with in a District. As you can see its very basic but it works as a layout.

And finally the original art work design for the game scenery and idea.

Showing the dense stacking of buildings within the District itself.

So now you have an idea what the world looks like. As we move ever closer to the production of this amazing little skirmish game.
